Hop aboard a catamaran and venture across the seas to two of the five northern islets of Mauritius, Gabriel Island and Flat Island, considered together as they lay a mere 700 m apart. Both of the stunning and peaceful islands are comprised of coralline sand on basalt lava-flows. Complete with semi-stabilized dunes and an area of elevated lush coral, Gabriel (42 ha), is one of the most peaceful flat islets in all of Mauritius. Vegetation on Gabriel Island comprises thriving grasslands and open scrubs.
Once you’re done visiting the serene Gabriel Island, jump back into your catamaran and skim across the ocean to visit Gabriel’s neighbour, Flat Island. Flat Island spans a vast 253 ha, making it the largest of the northern islets. Flat Island is also completely flat, except for its one and only hill which is topped by a quaint lighthouse. The vegetation on Flat Island is heavily adapted here, mostly by grasslands and scrubs which are heavily dominated by a thicket of exotics. When you’re finished with Flat Island get back into your catamaran once last time to visit the worthwhile and completely unforgettable Gunner’s Quoin. Found just 8km to the north of Mauritius, this beautiful islet of perfection covers 65 hectares and is of interest as there remains a historic level of native vegetation and wildlife that has stood the test of time.
Most of the tourists lucky enough to visit these wondrous and unique pieces of heaven mainly stick to visit the reefs offshore, with few ever willing enough to venture far on land. This makes Gabriel Island, Flat Island and Gunner’s Quoin the perfect destinations for you and your catamaran, as you soak up the sun in comfort and style, surrounded by some of the most awe-inspiring islands on earth.
